How you had YourSay:

In November 2020, community members were invited to review and give feedback on a proposed design concept and landscaping for the now complete Salthouse Community Centre in Haig Park, Braddon.

We sought feedback on the suitability of the designs and to discover any potential issues. We also sought to understand what your preferences are for features of the landscaping.

We used these insights to prepare the landscaping and internal fit out specifications, with consideration of budget and site limitations.

We looked at:

During the 2019 Haig Park community engagement we heard that people would like to see the former Haig Park depot converted into a flexible community centre that can host a variety of activities. The resulting Salthouse Community Centre is located north of Mort Street, Braddon on the north side of the park.

Building on your feedback and ideas, we created a simple but robust design and built the centre using adapted and reused materials from the former building. The new centre includes flexible spaces for diverse community activities such as gardening, painting, meetings, playgroups, yoga, and much more.

As per the draft design, the centre features:

  • a large multi-purpose room for larger gatherings
  • a large community room for creative workshops
  • another meeting room
  • one ambulant and two accessible and gender-sensitive bathrooms
  • a kitchenette
  • a wheelchair-compliant barbecue and picnic tables
  • a public garden for meeting and sitting in
  • outdoor seating and gathering areas

We'd like to acknowledge and thank lead consultant SMEC, Philip Leeson Architects, MSM Architects and IQon for their work on this project.

The Salthouse Community Centre opened in 2023.

How we used your views:

Your input helped us consider community needs and preferences regarding the building designs and landscaping. This helped us identify and resolve potential issues prior to construction.
