The location

Roughly the size of Black Mountain Peninsula at 35 hectares, the nature space is located within the newly formed Molonglo River Reserve. Whitlam and Denman Prospect will have more than 11,000 residents by 2024 who will benefit from direct access to the site.

The space is an important recreation and restoration hub for the local community. The area has some of Canberra’s best river access and is home to a wide range of native plants and animals, including the threatened Pink-tailed Worm-lizard, Superb Parrot and woodland habitat.

The site needs to be restored to its natural state.

Connection to Country

The ACT Government acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as Traditional Custodians of the Canberra region. Ngunnawal people are a thriving people whose life and culture is connected to this land in a way that only they understand and know. This connection links the past, present and future together and does not separate ‘nature’ from ‘society’ or ‘people’.

As well as being a location with good food and water, the Molonglo River was significant to Ngunnawal people because of its use as a corridor for people travelling across the region for trade and ceremonial purposes. This living history and cultural connection is significant to the nature space and has been considered in the draft designs in consultation with the Ngunnawal community.
